craftwercz Studios

Site Information

The creation of craftwercz Studios began back in the winter of 2003 when I decided I needed another means of freelance employment as my decade long career as a Scenic Artist in the Film and Television Industries was no longer stable, a sad reality for the majority of us here in Toronto. At the time I was technically stunted to say the least but had the forsight to realize that interactive multimedia was soon to be the new form of entertainment for the masses. In 2004 I was somewhat unnerved to discover that during the filming of Wagon’s East John Candy sadly passed from cardiac arrest and yet the film was completed via the use of CGI, virtual reality meets green screen. If an actor was no longer a necessary part of a production then the crew whom build and create the sets were also in danger of becoming obsolete. The invent of TiVO had already altered the bread and butter of the film industry by giving viewers the option to fast forward through the commercials, the money from which pays for the television series / movies of the week we indulge in.

I began by teaching myself graphic design programs which led to Macromedia’s Flash (now owned by Adobe) as well as Photoshop, Freehand and Fireworks, from there I spent months on end studying any and all online html resources. Personally, I found Web Monkey to be of enormous help, a free web design resource with simple, straight forward, easy to follow instructions and explanations. At the time most sites were designed using tables which soon morphed into framesets. I had a basic grasp of the workings of both and so began the creation of craftwercz Studios. Registered the domain name craftwercz.com in the summer of 2004 in the hopes of aquiring a domain in which to host it soon after which sadly never materialized.

I became a member of IATSE Local 873 in late 2004 and had very little free time to focus on the building of the site as I was working steadily as a Scenic but managed to utilize Blogger as a means of keeping a record of the productions I was working on.

Entering the Fall of 2006 film was dead again and I spent 6 months redesigning craftwercz Studios. Web design had undergone several changes since I had last indulged myself. Framesets were being weened out in preference for sites designed using css, took a bit of getting used to but I finally managed to get my head around all of the new coding techniques. Sadly with film work being slow to non existant I was still unable to afford a host for my domain but with many a struggle I managed to use an abundance of free blogs provided by Blogger to build what had become craftwercz studios.

In March of 2008 I had the mispleasure of having those at Google, which now own Blogger, completely wipe out my entire site without warrant, warning or reason. Sadly it happened whilst I was extremely busy working on the set of The Love Guru and I simply didn’t have the time nor the tenacity to get it back on line. It left a rather bitter taste having spent months on end configuring templates, uploading my portfolio, all of my content… to not even receive a single letter of reply back as to why my site had gone awol off both the web and my Blogger dashboard. I will certainly never recommend nor endorse their services again.

September of 2008 I finally purchased a domain space to host my site yet it has somehow taken me nearly two years to get enough free time and motivation to get everything back on line. It is now April of 2010 and once again find myself here trying to create something from nothing. This site has undergone many changes over the years, as have I, this is my only real record of them. Fortunately, though the various incarnations are no longer available online, I had the sense to keep copies of most of my posts throughout the years, funny reading them after all this time and witnessing the various incarnations of the site and myself.

Welcome to my site, hope you enjoy the ride as much as I have.
